Lighting & Reflectors Required - Like traditional bicycles, e-bikes must be equipped with:
- White front light visible from 500 feet.
- Rear reflector or light visible from 600 feet.
- Side reflectors for visibility.
Operating an e-bike without required lighting is an infraction and may result in a $92 fine.
Where E-Bikes Can Be Operated
- Class 3 e-bikes are not allowed on multi-use trails or bike paths.
- Riders must follow the rules of the road, including riding on the right side and yielding to pedestrians on sidewalks and crosswalks.
Parents & Guardians - Please strongly consider the appropriateness and safety of allowing your child to operate an e-bike that may be able to reach speeds in excess of 20 mph. Sadly, we’ve seen some serious crashes involving youth in neighboring communities. Our goal is to prevent that from happening in New Canaan.
"Our top priority is the safety of our youth and the public," police said on Facebook. "We urge all riders and families to follow the law and wear helmets every ride. Please ensure your child’s e-bike is equipped with proper safety gear and that your child understands the operating rules."
The department also encourages families to review safety laws together and supervise young riders where appropriate.
