New Canaan Police Offer Halloween Safety Tips For Families, Residents

New Canaan police have provided a list of tips for families and residents to help ensure a safe Halloween for all this week.

NEW CANAAN, CT — As Halloween approaches this week, New Canaan police have provided a list of tips for families and residents to help ensure a safe celebration for all.

Police urge residents to be mindful of young children and families while they are out trick-or-treating Thursday evening.

The following Halloween safety tips were provided by police in a Facebook post Wednesday:

  • Always check your children's candy before letting them eat it. Avoid homemade treats made by strangers.
  • Always accompany your young children when they are trick-or-treating.
  • If your child is old enough to trick-or-treat with friends, make sure everyone stays together and knows what time to come home. Be sure your child knows their home address and a guardian's phone number in case of emergencies.
  • Teach your children to look both ways before crossing the street and to use traffic signals and crosswalks.
  • Turn your headlights on early to spot trick-or-treaters.
  • Have your children carry glow sticks or flashlights.
  • Remind them to walk, not run, from house to house.
  • Keep candy away from your furry friends and keep pets prone to escaping behind doors or gates while answering the door.

Residents are also asked to contact the New Canaan Police Department at 203-594-3500 for routine matters and to call 911 for emergencies.
