New Canaan Police Seek Public Input for Accreditation

The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies will be in town to review the department's operations; receive public comments.

The New Canaan Police Department is undergoing a comprehensive review of its operation as part of its reaccreditation process.

As part of its commitment to maintain their status as an internationally accredited law enforcement agency, The New Canaan Police Department is scheduled for its eighth on-site assessment. This on-site assessment, one of which is conducted every three years, is to verify that the agency continues to meet or exceed the highest professional standards of modern law enforcement.

The accreditation program is a voluntary process, administered by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA), which requires that agencies demonstrate compliance with numerous professional standards. CALEA standards continually evolve to address all aspects of law enforcement best practices. During this assessment, the Department must comply with the 5th Edition of CALEA ’s Standards for Law Enforcement Agencies. Standards address every facet of the Department’s operations from budgeting and hiring practices to training and enforcement procedures. The standards are grouped into four basic areas: policies and procedures, administration, operations, and support services.
