School Board To Eye Changes to Calendar on Nov. 19

In addition to disrupting the lives of New Canaan residents for a week, Hurricane Sandy also brought with it challenges to the 2012-2013 calendar for New Canaan Public Schools. Officials had to close schools for six unplanned days while residents coped with living without electricity.

In order to figure out possible contingency scenarios—which include changing professional development days into school days or taking away days from the February or April vacations—the school board is set to deliberate on possible options at its upcoming board meeting, scheduled for Monday, Nov. 19. 

When the 2012-2013 school year began, Monday, June 17 was slated to be the last day of the year. Connecticut state law states Friday, June 21 is the last day children can attend school this year. 

New Canaan residents are certainly familiar with changes being made to the school calendar relatively early during the school year.

Last year, the district decided to get rid of a professional development day after schools opened four days late due to Tropical Storm Irene. Contingency plans were also developed to be prepared for the possibility storms would cause more school cancellations.

The board will discuss possible contigency plans at their next meeting, which is scheduled for Monday, Nov. 19 at 7:30 p.m. in the Wagner Room at New Canaan High School.
