New Canaan Schools' Finance Director Retires After 16 Years

Joe Meehan has a work ethic anyone would admire, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Mary Monroe Kolek said Tuesday.

Meehan will retire from his post as Director of Finance and Operations for New Canaan Public Schools this June, Kolek announced in a statement distributed to the press.

Meehan has served the district in an array of responsibilities since 1997, she noted.

“He has been tireless in his service to the schools and community and has contributed significantly to the success of the district. Although his title as Director of Finance and Operations emphasizes the business nature of his broad responsibilities, what sets Mr. Meehan apart and makes him a true asset to the community is that he never fails to put students at the center of all of his decisions.”

Here's some more background on Meehan, as described in the district's press release:

Previous to serving in New Canaan, Mr. Meehan enjoyed a career in finance and management in the private sector. In 1997 he brought his extensive corporate experience to New Canaan when he was hired as Financial Services Coordinator. In 2005, he was named as Budget Director and in 2011 Mr. Meehan was again promoted, assuming the role of Director of Finance and Operations.

In this capacity he has overseen a broad array of domains including food services, transportation, finance, school nurses and facilities.

In his letter of retirement Mr. Meehan stated, “I am truly thankful for the opportunity given to me to play such a significant role on behalf of students, staff and the people of the New Canaan Public Schools and Town for over 16 years. The Board and Town have provided tremendous resources and together we have used them to the best of our abilities. It has been both challenging and fun; the years have certainly flown by quickly. To paraphrase Frank Sinatra, they were very good years!”

Dr. Kolek added she is certain members of the school system and greater community share a deep appreciation for Mr. Meehan’s service and wish him well as he looks forward to spending time traveling and enjoying life with his family. She also noted the district is grateful for Mr. Meehan’s willingness to assist in any transition period as a new Director is hired.
