NEW CANAAN, CT — "Color Me," a new exhibition in New Canaan of work by the artists of the Silvermine Guild, explores a wide variety of subjects and themes, but every piece allows color to tell the story.

According to a news release provided by the Silvermine Arts Center, some offer insights into an emotional landscape. Others capture a scene through the unconventional or daring use of color.

"Color Me," which opened Feb. 15, will run through March 13 at the Silvermine Galleries, located at 1037 Silvermine Road in New Canaan.

An antidote to the winter season, this exhibition will surround visitors with a saturation of bright hues. The unleashed or restrained use of color illuminates each composition, according to the arts center.

For Barbara Shapiro, fiery red acrylic paint and a gloss medium create a sense of danger and immediacy. Leslie Alexander's architectural Forest Cells 7 surrounds the skeletal forms of winter trees with neon hues of blue, green and pink, according to the arts center.

Karen Butler's many shades of yellow wrap hikers in sunlight that seems to be inside the leaves. Katharine Draper creates layers of exuberant color in Luminous, and Ronnie Gold's painting of gladiolas dazzles with bold color and abstracted form, according to the arts center.

For the sculptors, color can play a crucial role. In his Pandora's Box 22, Stephen Klema uses color as a formal element as he balances concepts of escape and confinement, according to the arts center.

Elysa DeMartini's haunting installation made with white pillowcases walks the boundary between sleep and wakefulness. In the ceramic sculptures of Donna Namnoun and Lisa Scroggins, color becomes a critical component in the articulation of form, according to the arts center.

"Color Me" is full of lush examples of the way color works to reveal the intimate and the infinite. Some works explore the harmonies or dissonances of the natural world; others are meditations on diverse aspects of the contemporary American landscape, according to the arts center.

The paintings, sculptures, photographs and prints in Color Me offer a deeply personal and immersive experience.

The galleries are open Tuesday-Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. They are closed Sundays and Mondays.
