PBS Host and Conservation Luminary Carl Safina Announced as Speaker for Oldham Nature & Environment Lecture
New Canaan, Conn., [April 4, 2025] –New Canaan Library's 2025 Oldham Nature & Environment lecturer will be ecologist Carl Safina. Often described as a modern-day Thoreau, Safina is a lyrical non-fiction writer whose work explores how human actions are transforming the living world—and what those changes mean for all life on our planet. His work fuses scientific understanding, emotional connection, and a moral call to action. The lecture will take place on Sunday, April 27th at 3:00 PM in the Jim and Dede Bartlett Auditorium at New Canaan Library. Registration is available on the Library’s website at https://www.newcanaanlibrary.o... Elm Street Books will be on site for book sales and signing.

Safina will share insights from his best-selling book ALFIE & ME: What Owls Know, What Humans Believe, weaving a powerful and heartwarming tale of how a wounded screech owl named Alfie drew him and his wife Patricia into an unforgettable journey of connection, healing, and understanding across species.
Their extraordinary bond invites us to reconsider humanity’s place in the natural world. Safina explores the profound possibilities that emerge when we connect more deeply with other species—as many cultures have done for millennia—and reflects on what is lost when modern society isolates itself from the rest of life on Earth.

Safina grew up raising pigeons, training hawks and owls, and spending as many days and nights in the woods and on the water as he could. His writing has won a MacArthur “genius” prize; Pew, Guggenheim, and National Science Foundation Fellowships; book awards from Lannan, Orion, and the National Academies; and the John Burroughs, James Beard, and George Rabb medals. He is the author of ten books, hosted the PBS series Saving the Ocean, and his writing appears in The New York Times, TIME, National Geographic, and elsewhere. He is the first Endowed Professor for Nature and Humanity at Stony Brook University and is founding president of the not-for-profit Safina Center.
The Oldham Nature and Environment Lecture series is dedicated to presenting leading scientists, policy makers, strategists, and other experts to speak to our community about the many ways climate change is threatening our world, enabling us to be well informed on the topics of climate science and policy, and biodiversity impact and loss.
