Quarantined New Canaan Dog that Bit Trespasser Set to Be Cleared

The dog was scheduled for freedom Thursday after biting a trespasser on the property looking to pet the animal.

A Lincoln Drive dog that bit a woman who crossed onto its property was scheduled to have its mandatory quarantine end Thursday, April 11.

According to New Canaan Animal Control Officer Maryann Kleinschmitt, a Labrador mix secured by an invisible fence at 15 Lincoln Drive bit a woman who entered the property line and attempted to pet the dog.

"Love your own, leave ones you don't know alone," Kleinschmitt said. "You should never touch a dog you don't know. Always get permission, even if you do know it. This time of year, dogs are out and about. If it has teeth, it can bite. Dogs will use teeth like we use our hands."

The dog was up-to-date on its shots through February 2014, so Kleinschmitt said the dog was allowed to be quarantined at its home for the on-property bite. Off-property incidents require the animal to be quarantines off-site, she said.

Kleinschmitt said the property was not labeled "No Trespassing," but even if it was, owners should know their dogs and the dog's habits. She said if a dog exhibits territorial behavior, she would recommend putting the invisible fence yard line in the rear of the property.
