Son Charged In Fatal Assault Of New Canaan Dad At Irish Hotel: Report

A New York man is accused of killing his father, a New Canaan resident, at a luxury Irish hotel, according to media reports.

NEW CANAAN, CT — A New York man is accused of killing his father, a New Canaan resident, at a luxury Irish hotel Tuesday night, according to media reports.

The New York Times reports Henry McGowan, 30, has been accused of killing his father, John, 66, at Ballyfin Demesne, a hotel in County Laois, Ireland, after officers found a body at the hotel, later identified as John McGowan, just before 8 p.m. following a "fatal assault," according to Irish officials.

The McGowan family said in a statement sent to the New York Times they were deeply saddened by John McGowan's death and noted his son suffers from a severe mental illness. The Times also noted John McGowan worked at an investment firm near New Canaan.

The BBC reports Henry McGowan, a resident of Brooklyn, N.Y., appeared in Portlaoise District Court on Thursday. He was remanded in custody and ordered by a judge to receive immediate psychiatric assessment when he arrives at the prison.

BBC also noted John McGowan had traveled from the United States to Ireland on Tuesday before checking into the hotel.

Located on 614 acres about an hour away from Dublin, Ballyfin Demesne has long been admired as the most lavish Regency mansion in Ireland, according to the hotel's website.

The luxury Irish estate has notably been visited by a number of celebrities in recent years, including Kim Kardashian, Kanye West and George and Amal Clooney, according to media reports.
