The following tips to keep homes warm and safe this winter were provided by the New Canaan Fire Department:
- Keep it Clear: Keep anything flammable (and people or pets!) at least 3 feet away from space heaters, fireplaces and radiators.
- Choose Wisely: Use portable heaters with a testing laboratory label and automatic shut off features. Always plug them directly into the wall outlet, never use extension cords.
- Turn Off Before Bed: Space heaters should be turned off when you leave the room or go to sleep. Evenings (5 p.m. to 8 p.m.) are the peak time for home heating fires!
- Plan for Older Adults: If you care for someone 65 or older, check space heaters often, keep flammable items 3 feet away, and ensure heating equipment is inspected and cleaned professionally. Develop a fire escape plan based on their abilities, and keep necessities like glasses, hearing aids and a phone by their bed.
