Public Safety Storm Preparations:
1. The Town’s Emergency Operations Center will be open and monitoring conditions. If weather patterns hold, it is anticipated that the EOC will move to operational status at 4 pm today to coordinate emergency response efforts.
2. Reserve 911 for true life-threatening emergencies. Call (203) 594-3500 for police non-emergencies. Once the EOC is activated, (203) 594-4100 will be available for use.
3. It is anticipated that this will be a “shelter-in-place” emergency. Unless absolutely necessary, an emergency shelter will not be opened.
4. All New Canaan Public Safety Agencies will operate with increased staffing levels.
5. All emergency vehicles will be equipped with necessary chains — The Town’s Humvee will also be available for emergency response.
6. Once the storm hits everyone should stay off the roads so that emergency responders and road crews can handle true emergencies.
7. Please limit on-street parking to ensure that streets can be cleared and so that your vehicle is not buried.
8. To report a power outage, please call CL&P at (800) 286-2000.
9. Residents should check on their neighbors — especially those that are elderly or those that need special assistance.
10. Make sure any vital medications are in good supply for family and pets.
11. Ensure that smoke and CO (carbon monoxide) detectors are in place and operating properly.
12. Generator Safety – If you have a portable generator make sure you have adequate fuel on hand and follow all manufacturers’ instructions. Never run a
generator inside of a garage - even with the doors open.
13. Add containers of water to your freezer and refrigerator to help maintain temperature if you don’t have a back-up power supply. (A full refrigerator is more efficient than one that is partially full)
