NEW HAVEN, CT — It was shortly after 5 p.m. Tuesday when a New Haven K9 police cruiser parked on the 400 block of Orchard Street, responding to a call for service, was struck by a vehicle that crossed a double yellow line, police said.
Officers were not in the cruiser at the time, but the K9 was, though police said the dog did not appear injured.
Police said the driver, Barry Evans, 62, of West Haven, "was taken into custody after a brief struggle."

Police said that Evans "admitted to drinking for several hours prior to the collision, and several empty and partially full containers of alcohol were seen inside his vehicle."
Evans was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, drinking while driving, and interfering with an officer.

Police said he was held on $10,000 bond.
