'Unpretentious & Straightforward:' New Haven Community Leader

NEW HAVEN, CT — Without community leaders, New Haven wouldn’t hum along nearly as smoothly as it does. We’d miss their contributions in big and small ways.

Patch has partnered with T-Mobile to recognize these often unsung community leaders and celebrate their contributions.

This submission comes from Beth L. Miller, a New Haven resident who nominated Kathryn Eggert.

How do you know this community leader?

Through advocacy work for people with substance use disorder

What does this community leader do?

Kathryn is the Director of the APT Foundation's Legion Clinic, one of the oldest treatment programs in the United States, and pioneers in the utilization of medication for treating opioid disorder.

Why do you believe the community leader should be recognized or honored?

Dr. Eggert is unpretentious yet straightforward. She will tell you the truth, even if it's not what you want to hear; however her next sentence will be "Ok, now what can we do about it?" If the Legion Clinic wasn't there the amount of crime and people who are in need of care would be at the very least 20 times what it is. Dr. Eggert is the perfect person for this inner city clinic. She has a lot of respect from the clients, which is not an easy thing to earn, you have to be fair yet firm and available. Kathryn has her office on the first floor right in the heart of the clinic where clients are unrestricted from stopping into her office.

What's one thing you want everyone to know about the community hero?

It's very difficult to choose just one, however the fact that Dr. Eggert runs this inner city clinic with both a firm hand and a heart of gold.
