NEWINGTON, CT — A Maryland man has been accused in connection with a violent altercation in a Newington Walmart parking lot on Sunday over a parking spot, police said.

During that altercation, the driver of one vehicle fired a shot at the suspect, police said. The shooter has not been charged, according to the NPD, but the man identified as "the aggressor" was.

According to the Newington Police Department, officers responded to the Walmart located at 3164 Berlin Turnpike in Newington.

The NPD said Rashawn Harris, 26, of Westminster, Md., was identified as the aggressor in the incident and was arrested and charged with second-degree breach of peace.

He was detained on $5,000 bond and was to be presented to New Britain Superior Court on Monday, Nov. 17.

The driver of the other vehicle has been cooperative with this investigation, police said.

This investigation remains open and active.

According to the NPD, while officers were responding to the area, it was reported to dispatchers that one of the persons had a firearm and someone was injured.

The investigation revealed Harris approached a vehicle while it was trying to back into a parking space and confronted the driver.

The driver exited the vehicle, and the two engaged in a verbal argument that escalated to a physical altercation.

The driver of the vehicle was determined to have a valid pistol permit and was carrying a firearm, police said.

At some point in the altercation, the firearm was drawn, and a single round was discharged, according to the NPD.

No one sustained any gunshot wounds, but both parties sustained injuries from the physical altercation.
