1 Seriously Injured In New London Blaze, Fire Officials Say

NEW LONDON, CT — A person trapped on the second floor was seriously injured when a blaze broke out at a two-family home in New London, according to fire officials.

A police officer in the area discovered and reported the fire. Firefighters responded to the Shaw Street home at 9:42 a.m. Thursday.

Firefighters found a person trapped in the second-floor apartment. They rescued the person, who was taken to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

One firefighter was also injured. The firefighter was taken to the hospital and since has been treated and released.

"Due to the quick response, fire crews were able to confine the fire to a portion of the second-floor apartment, preventing further spread throughout the structure," fire officials said in a statement.

Three residents were displaced — two from the first-floor unit and one from the second floor.

All displaced occupants are being assisted by the American Red Cross.

The fire is under investigation.
