New London is in contention for the world record for an unbroken high five chain.
Visitors to the last day of Sailfest lined Bank Street on Sunday for the afternoon attempt. The line of participants started near the Custom House Maritime Museum and petered out near the intersection with State Street.
The unofficial tally had 350 people participating, easily besting the number in the standing record. According to the website recordsetter.com, the record formerly beloved to a Canadian high school. The John McCrae Secondary School in Ottawa, Ontario, had 145 students participate in a high five chain on May 24.
This record, in turn, was broken last week when 290 people participated in a high five chain in Camp Alvernia in Centerport, N.Y.
Before the record can go to New London, it has to be certified by the Guinness World Records. The qualifications for the longest high five chain require the high fives to take place in succession, with each person receiving and giving only one high five. The high fives must also be no more than five seconds apart.
