Bela Fleck, Don Giovanni, Holistic Pelvic Care

This Week in New London, May 8-14

New London Main Street has been reminded residents of its upcoming Spring Food Stroll, and you’ve got to wait one more week before that hits downtown from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on May 15. Tickets are $25 in advance or $30 on the day of the stroll, with a $5 discount for students, military, and groups of six or more.

For this week, music is the dominating factor. The shows start tonight with Common Ground, an acoustic open mic hosted by the Bulkeley House Saloon. Signups start at 7 p.m., and the music goes until 11 p.m.; musicians are asked to keep performances to a maximum of three songs. On Thursday, the Garde Arts Center brings in Bela Fleck and the Marcus Roberts Trio for a jazz and bluegrass show that starts at 7:30 p.m.; tickets are $44 to $54. The theater also welcomes the Connecticut Lyric Opera for a performance of Don Giovanni at 7:30 p.m. on Friday; tickets are $56. Finally, Bean and Leaf continues its regular sets of Richard Zack’s acoustic guitar music at 8 p.m. on Fridays and Sunny Morning La La’s ukulele family music at 10:30 a.m. on Sundays.

No new additions to the arts events on the New London Main Street calendar, though there are still a few shows to check out if you can stop into a downtown gallery in the next week. Peter Devine’s “Northern Moods: Paintings of Nova Scotia” is at the Gallery at Firehouse Square while David Fryburg’s photography show “The Essence of Intention: Mindfulness, Elegance, and Energy in Tai Chi Chuan” is at the Provenance Center. Both exhibits are up through May 25. The Provenance Center is also hosting "Chitrangada: Connecting the Polarities," a collaboration among eight artists on the subject of gender relations, and the exhibit will be up until May 28. Saturday art classes continue at the LQM Gallery, with Chinese ink courses starting at 10 a.m. for $28 a class and portraiture classes starting at 2 p.m. for $35 a class.

In other events, the New London Healing Arts Center has a free workshop on Saturday to discuss holistic ways of handling pelvic pain. Dr. Gwenn Rosenberg leads this event, which starts at 6 p.m. And 2 Wives Pizza celebrates Mother's Day on Sunday with a special brunch menu from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
