Best BBQ Competition, Gilding The Lily, and William Webb

September is going out quietly (although it seems like it just got here) but there are still a few things to check out this coming week. History dominates the things to do as chosen by New London Main Street on their calendar of upcoming events.

First off, you might notice a new schooner on the waterfront. The Lynx, a privateer based on a War of 1812 blockade runner, arrived at City Pier today and will be open for tours until 6 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday through Sunday; tours are $5 for adults and $2 for children 12 and under. The Lynx is also doing sailing tours from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on these days at a cost of $50 for adults and $25 for children.

Fort Trumbull State Park is hosting two events in the next week. The Friends of Fort Trumbull monthly meeting takes place at 7 p.m. on Thursday, featuring a presentation by historical re-enactor Kevin Johnson on William Webb, an African-American soldier from Hartford who served in the Civil War. Vintage baseball continues at the fort, with the Thames Base Ball Club facing off against the Newtown Sandy Hooks at 11 a.m. on Sunday. The Custom House Maritime Museum is holding their annual tag sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, selling books, antiques, and more.

Visiting the Lynx is something you can do during the third annual Best BBQ Chef Competition, running from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Area grill masters compete for the top prize while restaurants offer food demonstrations and performers offer live entertainment. The Field of Greens Farmers Market continues to visit Parade Plaza from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Fridays and noon to 4 p.m. on Wednesdays at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital on Wednesdays through October. And Thames River Wine and Spirits always offers a bit of wine and cheese for sampling from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Fridays.

Most of the art on display in local galleries has already debuted, but you can catch one new one this weekend. Gilding the Lily, a two-day floral art show by Michael Dodd, includes an opening reception from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Spirit Gallery on Friday; the show is only up until 8 p.m. on Saturday. Other shows currently on display are Dinotopia at the Lyman Allyn Art Museum, Immersion/Extraction at Expressiones, and Italian Visions/Visioni Italiane at Hygienic Art.
