5. Chiang Kai-shek, a member of the Kuomintang (Chinese Nationalist Party) and Chinese head of state between 1928 and 1949, died on this day in 1975 at the age of 87. He led a government in exile from Taiwan for 25 years after Communists prevailed in a civil war and established the People’s Republic of China in 1949.
