Five things to know for November 8

1. The nor'easter lingers at reduced strength today, with winds gusting up to 35 miles per hour and rain finally tapering off in the evening. The high temperature is 44 degrees with an overnight low of 35 degrees. Sunrise is 6:29 a.m., sunset is 4:35 p.m.
2. The Board of Education holds a workshop tonight. The meeting will continue to develop the vision and plan of action for improving student achievement at New London Public Schools. There will also be further discussion of instructional time. A period of public comments is allowed after the workshop, which starts at 7 p.m. at the Science and Technology Magnet High School.
3. The 60th annual Greek Food Festival continues today at St. Sophia Hellenic Orthodox Church between 11 a.m. and 9 p.m. It’s gotten popular enough that you can even use a credit card to pay for your meal, as long as it’s $10 or more. Tonight includes a performance by the Hellenic Dancers at 6:30 p.m. You can also tour the church at 1 p.m. at 7:30 p.m.

5. Wilhelm Roentgen, a German physicist, accidentally discovered the X-ray on this day in 1895 while doing experiments with a Crookes tube. And now you know why a radiological unit of measure is called a roentgen.
