Postcards, as always, are plentiful among the New London-related things for sale on eBay, but today's featured auction item might well appeal to collectors who like a bit of a personal touch to the messages of yesteryear.
This black-and-white postcard of the New London Harbor Light is offered by user thespokenwheel. The item itself keeps the details to a minimum, merely referring to the site as the "New London Light House," but the seller has done some research and correctly includes in the description the background that the lighthouse was built in 1801 and stands 89 feet tall, making it the oldest and tallest beacon in Connecticut.
The postcard itself is one of the most verbose ones I've seen, taking up nearly every space available (including the photo of the lighthouse). The message was penned in New London on Nov. 23, 1904, and sent to the writer's brother in Italy.
The New London Maritime Society is currently working to repaint the New London Harbor Light and recently launched a fundraising campaign to that end.
The postcard is described as being in very good condition, with some slight wear and indentation in the corners. The asking price is $3.45, plus $1.75 for shipping, and one bid has already been made. The auction ends at about 1:18 a.m. on Thursday.
