Echoes of Nature, Reaching For A Star, Captain's Favorites

After a slowdown around the holidays, the art scene is making a comeback on the New London Main Street calendar of events.

Studio 33 is about to take down its holiday exhibit, with the works coming down on Saturday. To replace this exhibit, the studio is bringing in the watercolor and pastel works of artists Marlene McLoughlin and Martha Wakeman on Tuesday. The Gallery at Firehouse Square also debuts a new collection this weekend, with “Echoes of Nature—Reflections of the Natural World” going up on Saturday. An afternoon reception runs from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and gives you a chance to meet featured artists Dianne Gorrick and Jacqueline White.

A pair of classical concerts will be held over the weekend, starting with the Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra on Saturday. The show, “Reaching for a Star,” includes a 7 p.m. lecture at the Garde Arts Center with music starting at 8 p.m.; tickets are $27 to $60. A free concert by the Coast Guard Band starts at 2 p.m. on Sunday at Leamy Hall. Entitled “Afternoon at the Movies—Captain’s Favorites,” the event features some of the retiring band leader’s favorite pieces from film scores.

Finally, if you’re interested in sprucing up the neighborhoods around New London there’s an event tonight you ought to attend. New London Landmarks’ “Beyond the Bridges” workshops continue with a 7 p.m. meeting at the Polish American Veterans Club. Tonight’s topics include Hodges Square revitalization and the use of landscaping to improve other areas.
