Firefighters Day, Faculty Reed Trio, Bowfire
This Week in New London, Feb. 27 to March 5

Art and music again have the strongest presence on the upcoming events highlighted by New London Main Street, but there’s also a chance to see some local public safety personnel honored.
In music, the Connecticut College Faculty Reed Trio puts on a concert of 20th century French music and the new work of composer Jack Vees on Friday. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. at the Cummings Arts Center. Then a flurry of fiddle and violin music comes to the Garde Arts Center on Saturday when Bowfire takes the stage. This show begins at 8 p.m., and tickets are $49. And as always, Bean and Leaf hosts Richard Zack’s fingerstyle guitar music at 8 p.m. on Fridays and the ukulele family tunes at 10:30 a.m. on Sundays.
In the art scene, Nancy DiTullio’s work at Studio 33 comes down on Thursday. However, the shop will replace it with a watercolor show by artists Angie Falstrom and Jodi Muench, starting on Monday. The artist discussions at the Provenance Center continue tonight, with topics of surrealism, Dada, and fantasy; registration is $15, and the event starts at 6:30 p.m. Ongoing exhibits include Denny Moers’ “Near Water’s Edge” at the Custom House Maritime Museum, Alonso Guevara’s “Fugitives” at Expressiones, and Traci Cremeans’ “Ego’s Last Bask: I Found My Answer in Your Ecstatic Substance” at the Spirit Gallery.

Finally, the Elks Lodge hosts its annual Firefighters Day recognition on Sunday. The event recognizes firefighters and paramedics from the region, with retiring Fire Chief Ron Samul as the honoree from the New London Fire Department. Social hour starts at noon and prime rib dinner at 1 p.m. will be followed by the reception. Admission is $20 per person.
