Halloween Happenings, In the Pink, and The Business of Art

Five things to help you plan your week in New London, October 28-November 2, 2013.

1. What's the Weather this week? Today should be sunny and dry with a high of 60°F and an overnight low of 35°F. Here's what Weather.com is predicting for the rest of the week—and it's looking good for Trick or Treaters on Halloween.  

  • Tuesday, Oct 29: Partly cloudy, high temperature 52°, low 42°, no chance of rain. 
  • Wednesday, Oct. 30: Morning showers, high temperature 53°, overnight low 39°
  • Thursday, Oct. 31, Full Halloween Forecast: Mostly cloudy, with a high temperature of 62°F and low of 55°F. There's just a 10 percent chance of rain. 
  • Friday, November 1: There's a 30 percent chance of showers today, with a high of 64°F and an overnight low of 48°F.
2. Halloween Happenings: 
  • The Public Library of New London will hold a two day FrankenFest to celebrate Halloween. Tonight kicks it off with a discussion of the book Frankenstein, by Mary Shelley in the Community Room. Light refreshments will be served. 
  • Halloween Concert with John Anthony & Friends is a Conn College tradition that features a program of eerie organ music as well as other selections to celebrate the 200th birthdays of composers Richard Wagner and Giuseppe Verdi. The concert will be held in Harkness Chapel, 270 Mohegan Avenue, New London, at 9:30 p.m. The audience is invited to wear Halloween costumes and enjoy candy after the concert. Tickets are $10 for general admission and $5 seniors, free to Conn College students. 
  • October 31: Dance Club Fall Performance with choreography by Connecticut College students at the Martha Myers Dance Studio in the College Center at Crozier-Williams, 270 Mohegan Avenue, New London, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $5.
  • Dickson's Tavern, 36 Bank Street, New London will hold its first annual Halloween Party, featuring costume contests, prizes, raffles, drink and food specials and music by DJ Seaneho. The party start at 10 p.m. and ends at closing time. No cover!  
3. Is it possible to make a living as an artist?Sure it is! All you need is a little business savvy. A new program offered by Hygienic Art is designed to help teach artists what they need to know to succeed. The Artist Academy @ Hygienic, involves a series of workshops at Hygienic Galleries, located at 79 Bank Street, New London, on Tuesday evenings once a month starting at 7 p.m. on October 29 and ending in May, 2014. 

4. All meetings scheduled for this week are being held today, October 28:
  • Education Parks & Recreation Committee meets at 5:00 p.m. in council chambers at City Hall.
  • Personnel Board meets at 5:30 p.m. in the Council Ante Room, New London City Hall.
  • Board of Ethics meets at 6:00 p.m. in New London Public Library.
  • Administration Committee meets at 6:00 p.m. in Council Chambers.
5. In the Pink, a series of art shows held at multiple galleries in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, end their run on October 31. If you haven't yet stopped in, there's still time to catch the shows at THE GALLERY AT FIREHOUSE SQUARE, 239 Bank Street, New London, and at Studio 33 Art and Frame Gallery, 140 Bank Street, New London.
