Letter To The Editor: What's Up With New London High School Basketball?

A letter to the editor

This is not a grudge letter, these are not accusations towards a disliked party or individual, nor are they untrue and untrustworthy statements from a disgruntled family member or dissatisfied and displeased party. These are simply the conscientious observations of a mere bystander.

For years and this from the pre-Chris Dunn era, I've scrutinized mediocre or less talented athletes make the NLHS basketball team. This including students without the qualifying required GPA selected over more academically and athletically suited ones. I've witnessed less adequate athletes biasly chosen to be showcased over superstars in the making, (Torin Childs-Harris over Chris Dunn whom was selected the state of Connecticut #1 high school player and now showcases his talents for the university of Providence) during college scoutings and high schools state finals championships. I've watched kids sacrificing entire summers and fiercely practicing and working out for upcoming tryouts, without even given the chance to contribute to the betterment and success of their school basketball team, due to the selection process currently in place by coach Craig Parker.

So tell me why superstar athlete-students (Keith Porter and Deante Bruton 27 ppg, and many more amongst such talented players whom have left NLHS transferring to different schools) should not move to a surrounding school district, showcasing their talents and skills while contributing to something bigger and also secure greater opportunities for a college education?

Why is Mr Parker's son, a kid that has never played basketball and many others with no knowledgeable acquired merits on the NLHS team, selected over academically and athletically able seniors that are far more skillful then over half the players on this year's selected or better put "chosen" roster?

I would like to pose these questions for the many seniors-athletes that have since freshman and following years, even after applying emphatic displays of skills, talents and leadership during tryouts and in school been denied the opportunities they beyond a shadow of a doubt, truly deserve.

When is this going to stop, when will it be enough, when will someone ask Mr Parker why, if not today?
