New London Beautification Committee Presents 2012 Awards

The New London Beautification Committee gave out its annual awards at Monday's City Council meeting, recognizing the businesses and individuals in the city who have worked to improve the appearance of the city.

The committee members are appointed by the City Council for two-year terms and charged with maintaining 22 sites such as planters and municipal buildings by tending gardens, picking up litter, and other activities. Each year it recognizes people who have helped with this mission.

This year's honorees are:

• The Carwild Corporation (Ryan Schriever, Rebecca Wildstein, Dan Burton) for landscaping done to their property on State Pier Road.
• The City Center District (George Dowker, Charlotte Hennigen) for work with hanging baskets, planters, wreaths, and other beautification efforts around downtown.
• Connecticut College (James Norton and Jim Luce) for maintaining an "attractive and serene" campus and arboretum.
• The Harbor Club (Lylette McDonald) for the second phase of its landscaping project.
• The Riverside Park Conservancy (Cathi and Harrison Straud, Kathy Struther) for their efforts to improve Riverside Park.
• Shaw's Landing (Gwen Noyes) for their hydrangea display.
• Union Station (Todd O'Donnell) for the installation of windox box planters.
• Jason Clark and Katie Jordan of the City Center District for keeping downtown plants watered and other beautification chores.
• Joshua Radkosky of Joshua Tree Lawn & Garden Services for providing the New London Beautification Committee with mulch.
• Matt Klotz for volunteering his masonry expertise by laying cobblestones around the statue of John Winthrop Jr.
• Dave Sugrue of Ocean Beach Park for supporting the committee's work at the beach gardens.
• Tim Hanser, Dave Denoia, and George Brosofske of the Department of Public Works for supporting the committee's work.
