New London Church Hosts 7th Annual Back to School Block Party

Miracle Temple Church is putting final touches on plans for this year’s Back to School Block Party. In its 7th year, Miracle Temple has hosted the event offering book-bags, school supplies and services to New London County students in preparation for the new academic year. Last year, the event successfully distributed 700 bags filled with supplies, serving over 2000 people total.

The Block Party returns on Saturday, August 24 to C.B. Jennings Elementary School located at 50 Mercer Street in New London from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.  The event will start with welcoming remarks from New London Mayor Daryl J. Finizio followed by Jennings Principal Laurelle Texidor.

In addition to the book-bags, Miracle Temple has partnered with a variety of organizations that will also be participating including New London’s College Access Program, The Drop-In Learning Center, The Child & Family Agency, Rotary Club, United Community & Family Services, Sound Community Services, and New London Youth Affairs, among others.

Sponsors & contributors include: Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Chelsea Groton Bank, Citizens Bank, Connecticut College – Office of Volunteer & Community Service, U.S. Coast Guard Academy – Office of Inclusion & Diversity, Aramark, Shiloh Baptist Church, Buffalo Wild Wings, Goldy’s Restaurant, Expert Tires, Valvoline Instant Oil Change, and Connecticut State Police.

New London Board of Education Member Delanna Muse notes the significance of the event, “This event truly brings together the strengths of our community for the greater good of preparing our students for the school year.  The outpouring of support from all the organizations and institutions greatly illustrates the power of collaboration to make New London better.”

The Back to School Block Party, was started in 2007 in response to the growing need of children needing to be equipped with the tools needed to succeed.  The planning committee expects to distribute 1,500 bags and serve more than 3,000 people total.
