Property records for New London have entered cyberspace.
City Clerk Nathan Caron said land records dating back to 1969 are now available at the site USLandRecords.com. Caron said the records are still available at City Hall, but that the effort looks to increase the accessibility of records.
The completion of the online database realizes a goal Caron said he has had since he was appointed City Clerk in 2011.
“When I first came in, one of the things I really wanted to focus on was updating the technological tools that were available to us,” he said.
Caron said several other communities in the area have their land records available online, and that Groton offered online records within a year of his appointment. He said there was no cost to join or maintain the system and that the city receives a monthly check for any revenues.
Records are available for perusal for free at City Hall, but the city charges a dollar per page for copies. The fee for online records is $2 per page to view and print, although researchers may also look through an index of records for free.
Caron said the online service will allow convenience and savings on commuting costs for title searchers who would otherwise have to drive into New London to see the records in person.
“It just seemed like a natural solution to a problem people often run into,” he said.
Caron said it took about seven months to build the online database.
