New London Police Charge Man In Domestic Incident

William Diaz allegedly assaults woman over a period of several hours

The New London Police Department has arrested a man on multiple charges after he allegedly entered a woman's apartment and assaulted her over a period of several hours.

William Diaz, 44, was charged with first-degree reckless endangerment, first-degree unlawful restraint, second-degree burglary, second-degree strangulation, third-degree assault, and third-degree criminal mischief. He was held on a $25,000 cash or surety bond.

Deputy Chief Peter Reichard said officers responded to a report of a domestic disturbance at a 44 Franklin Street apartment at 5:35 p.m. on Thursday. When they arrived, they found that the apartment was open and unsecured. Reichard said the department initially thought that an abduction had taken place.

Officers and detectives were abled to locate the 42-year-old woman a short time later. She told police that Diaz illegally entered her apartment, assaulted her, and fled before officers arrived. The woman was taken to Lawrence & Memorial Hospital for treatment of injuries.

Diaz was arrested soon after when he was spotted walking on a city street. Diaz also had an outstanding warrant from Oct. 19 charging him with violation of a protective order and interfering with police.
