Coast Guard swimmer breaks two school records; high school spring sports start next week

For the high school sports out there, you’ll have to go without for one more week. The first spring competitions for both New London High School and the Williams School start at April 3.

The Bears’ baseball team (8-6) continues to put in a strong showing. After a 10-7 loss to Johnson & Wales on Thursday, the Coast Guard defeated WPI 8-6 on Friday and split a doubleheader with them on Saturday, losing 12-8 before earning a 5-0 shutout. The team closed the week with another split on Sunday, with both the Coast Guard and Castleton picking up 1-0 victories in the day.

The softball team had one doubleheader in the past week, defeating Smith 12-2 and 4-2 on Sunday to bring their season record to 4-2.

The men’s tennis team lost to Brandeis 9-0 on Saturday and to Stevens 8-1 on Sunday.

The track and field teams made the journey up Route 32 to Connecticut College’s Camel Invitational, with the men’s and women’s teams each placing second of six participating schools.

Mitchell College

The Mariners’ softball team (3-8) put its first three wins of the season on the board over the weekend, starting with a doubleheader split with Regis on Friday. The team lost the first game 2-1 before winning the second one 9-1. They also twice defeated Lyndon State on Sunday, winning the first game 8-2 and recovering from a five-run deficit and rallying with one out left in the final inning to triumph 9-8.

The baseball team improved their record to 7-6, starting with a 9-5 win over Newbury on Monday. Mitchell split a result with Anna Marie on Sunday, losing the first game 5-4 before winning 6-5 in the second one.

The men’s lacrosse team (5-2) was tied with Regis 6-6 in the third quarter of Saturday’s game before an explosive last quarter tacked on an additional eight goals to earn the Mariners a 14-6 win.

Connecticut College

Both of the Camels’ lacrosse teams had a win and a loss in the past week. The women’s team (2-4) crushed Wellesley 15-3 on Wednesday but dropped an 11-7 result to Williams on Friday. The men’s team (3-2) lost to Plattsburgh State 7-5 on Wednesday before beating Williams 10-6 on Saturday.

The women’s water polo team (6-6) defeated Penn State-Behrend 21-3 on Friday but lost to Grove City 7-5 on the same day. The team had another split on Saturday, defeating Carthage 12-7 and losing to Washington and Jefferson 10-8. The Camels closed the weekend with an 18-5 win against Utica and 10-7 defeat of Macalester on Sunday.

The coed sailing finished second of 19 teams at Owen/Mosbacher/Knapp Trophy regatta over weekend with 210 points. The team also placed 10th of 17 teams in 84th Boston Dinghy Club Challenge Cup Regatta with 472 points.

At their home track and field invitational, both the men’s team and the women’s team placed fourth of sixth teams.

Standout athletes

  • Bobby Bleisten: had 15 saves for the Camels in Connecticut College’s lacrosse win over Williams
  • Christian Brindamour: Coast Guard swimmer, broke the academy records in the 100 backstroke and 100 freestyle at the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships
  • Kaisea Caramante: earned her first win by pitching for Mitchell for the entirety of the second game against Regis, giving up only one run on six hits
  • Drew Doyle: had two hits and batted in three runs in Mitchell’s win against Newbury
  • Sam Gill: Connecticut College swimmer who finished third in the 100 fly in the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships on Wednesday
  • Nicky Jasbon: scored for the Camels several times in the weekend water polo competitions, including 10 goals, two steals, and a block during Connecticut College’s water polo competitions against Penn State-Behrend and Grove City
  • Erin Lisko: hit a solo home run for the Coast Guard in the first softball win against Smith
  • Demetre Lyras: Mitchell lacrosse player, named ECAC Division III New England Offensive Player of the Week and NECC Player of the Week; had four goals in the win against Regis
  • Izzy Marx, Libby Nichols, and Taylor Thomas: Connecticut College players who each had three goals in the Camels’ win against Wellesley
  • Derek Petty: struck out a career high 12 batters in the Coast Guard’s shutout of WPI
  • Ed Sella: hit a three run double for the Coast Guard in their first win over WPI
  • Shane Sulllivan: had five goals in Mitchell’s lacrosse win against Regis
  • Mike Tandy: pitched seven innings and struck out three in Mitchell’s win over Newbury; also retired nine batters, struck out two, and gave up one hit in the win over Anna Marie
  • Nate Toll: pitched six innings without allowing an earned run in the Coast Guard’s first win over WPI
  • Bridget Thomson: batted in the game-winning run in Mitchell’s second game against Lyndon State
  • Catherine Walker: hit a grand slam for the Coast Guard in the sixth inning of the first softball game against Smith
