New London Tube: Princess Cruise Buzzes Ledge Light

Cruise ship dwarfs lighthouse at mouth of Thames River

New London isn't exactly home to a lot of skyscrapers. Still, it's a little odd to realize that there are times when the tallest structure in the city limits is floating.

This is made quite clear in this video of Princess Cruise's Crown Princess passing Ledge Light (and the Mystic Whaler) to the Love Boat theme. The 952-foot cruise liner visited New London for a visit in the fall of 2010. The ship has plenty of width and height as well. At 195 feet tall, it is over three times taller than the 58-foot lighthouse.

How does the New London Harbor Light stack up? A little better, but at 89 feet the cruise ship still has twice the height. The Mohican's 13 floors top out at 165 feet. The AT&T tower may have the Crown Princess beat, but I haven't been able to find how tall it is.

The Connecticut Cruise Ship Task Force identifies New London's deep water port at State Pier as having easy access for cruise ships. The pier itself is off limits to residents during cruise ship visits due to Coast Guard and Department of Homeland Security regulations, but visitors are brought into the city to visit.
