Nighttime Roadwork, More Room At The Shelter, And Remembering Anthony
Five things to help you plan your day on Wednesday, September 4, in New London

1. What's the Weather? Just as I was beginning to despair that we may never see the sun again, weather.com is promising us a sunny day today, with a high temperature of 79 degrees and no chance of rain. Tonight will be clear with a low of 62 degrees.Â
2. Road Work: Drivers navigating some of the main routes through New London last night encountered roads narrowed by traffic cones and a lot of heavy equipment. The Department of Transportation began road work in New London on September 3 on the following streets: Bank Street from Truman Street to the Waterford town line; Lee Avenue; and Jefferson Avenue from Bank Street to Colman.Â
Milling work will continue through September 9, with paving to follow from September 9 to 17, and handwork from September 18 to 20. All the work will be done overnight from 7:30 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. every day except for Saturday night into Sunday morning.Â
3. More Beds At the Shelter: The New London City Council last night approved the Homeless Hospitality Center's request for emergency authorization to expand the capacity at the new shelter on State Pier Road from 25 beds to 50 beds from November 1, 2013, until April 30, 2014. The shelter will continue to operate in its current location at St. James Episcopal Church through November 1, where it already has 50 beds.Â
4. Remembering Anthony: A memorial plaque will be dedicated at 10 a.m. today to Anthony Bernoudy, the 6-year-old boy who drowned in New London this summer. Anthony was enjoying a day at Toby May Park on Ocean Avenue when his family reported him missing on July 5. After a search on land and in the water, divers recovered his body off Greens Harbor Beach a few hours later. Â
5. Hungry? New London's Field of Greens farmers market is open today from noon to 4 p.m. at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital. Once you've satiated your own hunger, you might want to catch David Bowie satisfying his in the cult classic vampire movie, The Hunger, which is playing at Hygienic Art Park, 79 Bank Street, New London at 8 p.m. tonight.Â
