Yes, even the Police Chief can be targeted by scammers!
Here’s how to spot the red flags
The email came from a Gmail address, not an official @newlondonct.gov account.
It asked for money and tried to create urgency (“I got robbed… I’ll pay you back”).
It gave a suspicious phone number and asked to send “temporary payment info.”
If you ever get a message like this:
• Don’t send money (or gift cards).
• Don’t click links or reply.
• If it claims to be from someone you know — call or text them
using their real, known contact info to confirm.
• You can also report scam emails to reportfraud.ftc.gov or to
your local police department’s non-emergency line.
Scammers are getting more creative — stay alert, trust your instincts, and help spread the word!
