The Ledge Light Health District has announced that a bat from the Gardner Ave. area of New London has tested positive for rabies.
The organization says the disease may infect any warm-blooded animal but is typically spread by wild animals or stray dogs and cats. The virus is found in the saliva and brain tissue of infected animals and may be spread by scratches, bites, or contact or saliva with open wounds.
The Ledge Light Health District urges residents to refrain from feeding or approaching stray animals. Anyone with any questions or concerns should contact the organization at 860-447-5231.
