Silhouettes, String Serenade, Jill Harrington

It’s a quieter week in upcoming events highlighted by New London Main Street, but there are still a few things to check out.

For music, the Garde Arts Center brings in a pair of shows in the coming week. The Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra’s “String Serenade” begins at 8 p.m. on Saturday; tickets are $27 to $60, with $12 student discount admission available on the evening of the performance. The Garde also brings in the Broadway show A Chorus Line at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday; tickets are $60. And as always, Bean and Leaf welcomes the Jazz Trio for a performance every Monday from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Two art openings are also on the docket for the week. The Provenance Center begins “In the 21st Century: A Guided Discussion,” tonight at 6:30 p.m. Registration is required for this series of art talks, which run on Wednesday through April 10; tonight’s discussion is a discussion of the origin and history of art. The paintings of Jill Harrington opened on Jan. 31 at the Gallery at Firehouse Square, and an opening reception will run on Thursday from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

In other events, the Outskate Hunger effort continues at the Rink at Parade Plaza on February Fridays. Bring a non-perishable food item for donation to the Gemma E. Moran United Way Labor Food Center and get free admission and skate rentals from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. For a Valentine’s Day special, the Custom House Maritime Museum brings in Deborah O’Connor for silhouette portraits from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday. Call ahead to make an appointment; silhouettes are $35 while copies are $15.
