TRACES, Burnished Brass, Hempstead Historic Tour
This Week in New London, May 1-7

Welcome to May, New London! The weather is fine and New London Main Street has highlighted a few things going on in the community in the coming week.
A couple of learning opportunities are available this week. Nature Explorers, a weekly series of programs on wildlife and the environment offered by the Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center, continues at 3:30 p.m. today at the Public Library of New London. If you’re reading this too late to attend, you have one more chance next Wednesday at the same time and location before the series wraps up. Municipal historian Sally Ryan leads a walking tour of the Hempstead Historic District at 2 p.m. on Sunday, starting at the Hempsted Houses; the cost is $5 or free to Connecticut Landmarks members.
As for live performances, the Garde Arts Center concludes its Broadway series with TRACES. This mix of acrobatic circus stunts and street performance hits the stage at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, and tickets are $53. The Coast Guard Chamber Players gives a free “Burnished Brass” concert at 2 p.m. on Sunday at Leamy Hall.
In the art world, LQM Gallery continues to offer Saturday portraiture and Chinese ink classes. Chinese ink starts at 10 a.m. and costs $28, while portraiture starts at 2 p.m. and costs $35. Ongoing shows include David Fryburg’s “The Essence of Intention” photography show at the Provenance Center and Peter Devine’s “Northern Moods” landscapes of Nova Scotia at the Gallery at Firehouse Square.
