Mohan was a member of a local magic group which met in Bethel. He was a long-time performer at Chuck's Steak House in Danbury in the mid-'90s, entertaining guests as they dined with their families.
Mohan appeared in court on Monday to answer to the charges of shooting the officer after a 30-minute standoff. He was wearing hospital gown and limping due to a recent surgery, The News Times reported. His attorney Lawrence Peck told the judge that Mohan had mental health issues but has been clean and sober for years. A colleague told the paper that his mental health had been in decline since his surgery.
Mohan wrote on his Facebook page that he recently completed a FEMA training entitled, "Active Shooter: What You Can Do" and posted his certificate of completion.
Mohan describes himself on his website as a "self-taught magician since age 12," who performs magic full time, lectures other magicians and performs for a limited clientele."
He is next due to appear in Bantam Superior Court on July 19, 2016.
