Here are five outstanding nonprofit groups you should know about in the Newtown area:

Kitten Associates, Inc. is an all-volunteer, home-foster based, non-profit cat rescue located in Sandy Hook. Its mission is to save pregnant cats, orphan kittens, or kittens with challenging medical conditions.

Kevin's Community Center provides medical services for the underinsured, as well as community wellness and screening.

The Catherine Violet Hubbard Animal Sanctuary pays tribute to the life of Catherine Violet Hubbard, a 6-year-old victim of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings, "honoring the bond between animals, humans and the environment."

EverWonder Children's Museum aims to cultivate a lifelong love-of-learning in children by encouraging them to "think, inquire, and wonder about the world around them." The museum offers hands-on exhibits and programming to spark imagination in the fields of science, technology, engineering, arts, and math.

Newtown Hook & Ladder is a completely volunteer fire company, covering almost 64 square miles, providing fire protection and advanced rescue to the town.
