Newtown Water And Sewer Authority To Hold Hearing, Meeting On Proposed Rate Bump

Newtown's Water and Sewer Authority will hear public comment and consider a proposed 9% sewer rate increase Jan. 8.

NEWTOWN, CT — The Newtown Water and Sewer Authority will hold a public hearing and a regular meeting Thursday to receive public input and consider a proposed increase to sewer usage rates.

The public hearing is scheduled for 7 p.m. Jan. 8 at the Public Works Department, 4 Turkey Hill Road. Authority members will hear public comment on a proposal to increase the primary sewer usage rate by 9 percent, effective July 1, 2026. The change would raise the rate from $10.51 to $11.46 and includes a general administrative increase of 9 percent.

Immediately following the hearing, the authority will convene its regular meeting at the same location.

During the meeting, members are expected to consider approval of minutes from the Dec. 11, 2025, regular meeting and public hearing, and receive reports from Veolia and the Public Works director.
Under new business, the authority will discuss the proposed 9 percent increase to the primary sewer usage rate and may take action.

Several items are listed under unfinished business, including discussion of the Danbury Sewer Plan Upgrade Payment Plan, a sewer easement at 63 S. Main St., the authority’s grinder pump policy, financial matters, inflow and infiltration issues, and negotiations related to the Danbury interlocal sewer agreement. Board member comments are also scheduled.

Both the public hearing and regular meeting agendas list adjournment as the final item. The authority is chaired by Mark Benedict.
