2 Drivers Arrested After Shots Fired In Road Rage Incident On I-91 In North Haven: PD

Both drivers were arrested after a road rage incident that involved shots fired on I-91 in North Haven, according to state police.

NORTH HAVEN, CT — Two drivers were arrested after a road rage incident in which shots were fired on I-91 South in North Haven on Thursday afternoon, according to Connecticut State Police.

State troopers responded around 1:20 p.m. on July 3 to the area of I-91 South near Exit 10 in North Haven for a reported road rage incident involving shots fired, according to police.

Arriving troopers spoke with the complainant, 30-year-old Jonathan Yanagisawa of Woodbridge, who said that he was involved in a road rage incident and that the other driver shot at him, according to police.

Yanagisawa told police that he wasn’t injured and he believed only one shot was fired at him.

“Troopers located a bullet hole in the A pillar of Yanagisawa's vehicle consistent with his explanation of the incident,” police wrote in a news release. “Yanagisawa also explained that he had captured the incident on video.”

Police said the dash camera video provided the license plate of the other vehicle involved, and troopers identified the suspect as 34-year-old Andre Smith of Bridgeport.

“Troopers later located Smith, who explained that he was involved in a road rage incident and fired one shot at the other vehicle as he was in fear for his own safety based upon how the other operator was driving,” police wrote. “Smith cooperated with the investigation and surrendered his firearm, which was seized as evidence.”

Smith was arrested on charges of illegal discharge of a firearm, first-degree assault, and first-degree reckless endangerment. He was released after posting a $150,000 bond with a court date of July 18.

“Further review of the video as provided by Yanagisawa revealed that he was complicit in this incident as he was operating recklessly and endangering others on the roadway,” police wrote.

Yanagisawa was also arrested and charged with reckless driving, illegal operation of a motor vehicle with intent to harass / intimidate and second-degree reckless endangerment. He was released after posting a $2,500 bond with a court date of July 17.
