Suspect Surrenders After Hours-Long Standoff: North Haven Police

Police said they received a call from an "irate" person who was angry about a recent arrest, and threatened to kill police and harm himself.

NORTH HAVEN, CT — A man was arrested after an hours-long standoff with police at a home in North Haven on Thursday, police said in an update.

Police said the department’s dispatch center received a call around 3 p.m. from an “irate” person who was angry about a recent arrest by North Haven police.

The person “made threats to kill police, harm himself, and/or force a suicide by cop situation,” according to police. Officers responded to the 100 block of Montowese Avenue and determined another person was also in the home, according to police.

“A perimeter was established around the home, and officers were able to remove the uninvolved person from the house,” North Haven police wrote in a post on Facebook. “After containing the sole occupant to the house, negotiators were utilized to convince the suspect to peacefully surrender.

“After nearly 6 hours the suspect, who was armed with multiple large knives, agreed to surrender and exited the home, following commands from North Haven officers outside.”

Police said the suspect has been charged with interfering w/police and threatening, and was taken to an area hospital for an evaluation.

There were no injuries to the suspect or officers, according to police.

“In addition to our amazing personnel on scene, we wish to thank the North Branford, Branford, and East Haven Police Department, for providing us with various levels of assistance throughout the incident,” police wrote.

Police said there is a heavy police presence in the area of Middletown Ave near Montowese, with portions of Montowese Avenue closed.

The situation is ongoing, according to police.

Police are advising motorists to avoid the area.
