NORTH HAVEN, CT — An elderly resident was hospitalized after an apartment fire Monday in North Haven, according to officials.

The caller said a person was on the ground and there was heavy smoke visible, according to officials.

“Initial arriving fire and police units found occupants evacuating the building and alarms sounding for a remote location,” officials wrote in a post on the North Haven Fire Department’s Facebook page. “Rescue 1 arrived on scene and entered the building to conduct a rapid search of the apartment while Engine 1 set up a fire attack. The rescue crew entered the apartment to find an occupant on the ground with a police officer present. The occupant was conscious but unable to get up off the floor.

“A neighbor entered the apartment prior to arrival and moved the pot into the sink and tried to use a fire extinguisher but was not successful. The occupant was removed from the building and evaluated by EMS. Additional units checked all of the apartments in the wing for injuries from smoke exposure. Truck 1, Volunteer Engine 7, and supported ventilation efforts, Engine 2 staged for water supply and support of the building's sprinkler system.”

Officials said meter reading confirmed that the air wasn’t hazardous, and occupants returned to the building.

No one was displaced from the building, and officials said the fire is being investigated by the North Haven Fire Marshal’s Office.

“As units were returning to quarters after this fire, a second report of fire coming from a house was reported in the area of Ridge Road to the North Haven 911 center at 7:22 p.m.,” officials wrote.

With units still in the area from the previous incident, officials said they were sent to the new location.

“Car 2 arrived on scene and found workers performing a controlled burn of liquid propane from a leaking 1000 lb tank,” officials wrote. “Fire units investigated and ensured safe operations were being performed. The propane company was following proper procedures for a ‘flare off’ operation and was due to be completed at the time of this post. This procedure was being performed due to a leak in the valve tree requiring the tank to be drained before repairs could be made.

“The North Haven Fire Department reminds all residents of the hazards of cooking fires in the kitchen and on the grill and will be releasing a video safety message over the next week following a previously planned public safety demonstration on 7/8/25.”
