Firefighters Battle Wind, Cold To Extinguish House Fire In North Haven

Officials said strong winds & dropping temperatures, along with arcing live wires in the front yard, hampered efforts to extinguish the fire

NORTH HAVEN, CT — Firefighters battled strong winds and bitter cold to extinguish a house fire late Monday night in North Haven, according to officials.

The North Haven Fire Department responded around 10:45 p.m. to a 911 call reporting a house fire on Rimmon Road. The occupant had called 911 and safely self-evacuated the home, according to officials.

The first crew arrived at the scene within six-and-a-half minutes from the time of dispatch, officials said.

“At the time of dispatch, temperatures in North Haven were 23 degrees and dropping with wind speeds at 14mph gusting to 24mph which hampered extinguishment efforts,” officials wrote in a post on the North Haven Fire Department’s Facebook page. “Live wires which were arcing in the front yard also limited access and complicated suppression efforts. All HQ units responded which included E1, R1 and T1, Montowese E2 and Northeast E7 volunteers which arrived on scene within 10 minutes in addition to C2 and C3. Mutual aid consisting of an engine and a shift commander from Hamden FD responded to the scene and West Ridge E4 and E6 provided town coverage.”

The cause of the fire is being investigated by the North Haven Fire Marshal’s office.

“There were no reported injuries to civilians or firefighters,” officials wrote. “North Haven PD provided invaluable scene protection as the street remained closed for several hours. UI responded to address arcing wires, North Haven CERT provided on scene rehabilitation for responders and North Haven DPW responded following the incident to treat roadways due to icing.”
