Have you seen the large, maroon-colored recycle bins in town? They look like those used to donate clothing, but don't put any shirts or socks in them! They are solely for the disposal of redeemable bottles and cans.
"Every nickel redeemed goes towards a paycheck," said SARAH, Inc. Manager of Business Development Jim Lamb.
SARAH Inc., is the shoreline organization that provides programs and work placement for individuals with intellectual and other disabilities. They were founded in 1957.
Due to a generous gift of $15,000 from Alcoa, the organization was able to purchase five of the large bins for placement in North Haven.
You can spot them on the town green; at the recycling center on Elm Street; at Montowese Park on Route 103; and at Memorial Field.
Lamb said that Walt's Auto Body out of North Branford delivered and placed the heavy bins free of charge.
The project not only provides work and a paycheck to SARAH, Inc. clients, it helps reduce litter in the community.
"In 2012, there were 660,000 cans and bottles collected from the redeemable bins program," said Lamb.
Most important, they created 12 additional jobs for SARAH, Inc. workers.
Overall, there are 18 large bins in the state including North Haven, Branford, Madison, Guilford, and Clinton and 95 smaller, heavy-duty cardboard bins scattered throughout these communities.
So remember, if you can donate your used and redeemable bottle or can in the SARAH, Inc. recycling bins, you help provide a job and a paycheck to folks of all ages with disabilities.
