North Haven Voters Reject $92.7M Town and Education Budget

The Board of Finance will have to come up with a new budget, which involves cuts.

North Haven voters rejected a $92.7 million town and education budget proposal on Tuesday, which means the Board of Finance will have to present a new and reduced budget to residents, according to the New Haven Register.

The proposed budget was a 4.4 percent increase compared to last year’s budget, meaning taxes would have been raised by 1.7 mills, according to the Register. A 9 percent voter turnout rejected the proposal of $43 million to run the town and $49.7 million for the education.

A budget has to be passed by July 1; therefore, work will begin promptly on a new proposal, the Register reported. The possibility of layoffs and personnel cuts loom with the coming cuts.

Belief for why the budget might have failed has to do with the excessive increase compared to last year’s budget, as well as the tax increase, according to the Register.
