Teen, 13, Tried To Steal Food Delivery Driver’s Car: North Haven PD

The delivery driver's 8-year-old child was in the vehicle when the 13-year-old tried to steal it and drive away, according to police.

NORTH HAVEN, CT — A 13-year-old boy was arrested after police said he tried to steal a food delivery driver’s vehicle outside of Jersey Mike’s in North Haven on Thursday night.

Police responded to Universal Drive in North Haven around 6 p.m. on what was initially reported as a vehicle accident but was later determined to be an attempted car theft, according to North Haven police.

Officers found that the victim, a food delivery driver, had parked their vehicle and left it running while they entered Jersey Mike’s for a food pickup, according to police.

Police said the driver’s 8-year-old child was in the vehicle at the time.

“Upon exiting the store, the driver observed a young male in the vehicle, attempting to drive it away,” police wrote in a post on Facebook. “The driver ran to the vehicle, causing the juvenile to flee. The car, still in motion, dragged the owner for a few feet, before they lost their grip on the vehicle, which was stopped several feet later by good Samaritans.”

The victim suffered a minor injury, according to police.

Officers found the suspect, a 13-year-old juvenile from Hamden, nearby and arrested him.

The juvenile was charged with larceny of a motor vehicle, assault, reckless endangerment, risk of injury to a minor, and interfering with police. The juvenile was taken to the Bridgeport Juvenile Detention Center, according to police.
