Fire officials said a family's dog was killed in a fire that broke out in the basement of a home in Norwalk.
NORWALK, CT — A family's dog was killed in a fire that broke out in the basement of a Norwalk home early Thursday morning, according to fire officials.
In a news release, Deputy Fire Chief Jonathan Maggio said crews were called to a single-family home on Dairy Farm Road just after midnight, where residents were actively trying to extinguish a basement fire and rescue a family dog as firefighters arrived.
Firefighters encountered heavy fire in the basement of the home that was extending to the upper floor living area, Maggio said.

Crews found the dog while simultaneously attacking the fire, which was quickly brought under control, however the blaze caused extensive fire and smoke damage throughout the home, according to Maggio.
Efforts to revive the dog by Norwalk Hospital emergency medical service crews were unsuccessful, and it was taken to a local animal hospital, Maggio said.

In a separate email Thursday morning, Maggio said he confirmed with the animal hospital the dog had died.
Some residents who escaped the home suffered minor injuries considered to be non-life threatening, according to Maggio.
The home was declared unfit for occupancy and two residents were displaced as a result, Maggio said.
The Norwalk Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the cause of the fire, according to Maggio.
The American Red Cross said it provided assistance to meet the family's immediate needs, including a recovery envelope containing information helpful to families recovering from a fire and comfort kits containing personal care items a resident might need when suddenly displaced from their home by a fire.
