Fire Department: Be a 'Hydrant Hero' and Shovel out Fire Hydrants

An announcement from Norwalk Fire Department:

When removing snow from your sidewalk and driveway, please take a few minutes to clean the snow from around the fire hydrant in front of your home or business.

There are nearly 1,500 fire hydrants in Norwalk, and while there will are crews of firefighters removing the snow daily, it can take several days or longer to clear them all.

The Norwalk Fire department needs a clear space out to the street in front of a hydrant and space behind the hydrant for a fire fighter to open the hydrant valve.

By clearing a 3-foot circle all around the hydrant and a clear path to the street, firefighters will have immediate access to water. By adopting a fire hydrant, you can help the City’s firefighters save lives and protect property.

The Norwalk Fire Department is asking residents to clear snow from hydrants closest to their homes and to be a good neighbor and clear snow from fire hydrants for family, friends or neighbors who may have medical conditions, disabilities, or those who are elderly that may be unable to do so themselves. This act of kindness will benefit the entire neighborhood.

With more snow on the way and several more weeks of winter ahead of us, it’s never too late to be a “hydrant hero”.
