Iconic Norwalk Bakery 'Permanently Closes' After Nearly 70 Years In Business

New York Bakery, a Norwalk staple since the 1950's, recently posted a sign announcing the Main Street business' permanent closure.

NORWALK, CT — New York Bakery, an iconic establishment in the city's Wall Street area with a history that dates back to the 1950's, permanently closed its doors last week, according to a sign posted to the bakery's door.

The sign, which could be seen on the bakery's door Tuesday, indicates the bakery closed its doors for good on Nov. 27, just a day prior to Thanksgiving.

"We would like to thank you for all this time you supported our business," the sign reads. "Thanks to our loyal customer who made this place their second home."

The inside of the store was visibly cleared out as of Tuesday afternoon, and empty display cases and shelves could be seen through the bakery's large windows.

The bakery, located at 52 Main Street, was unable to be reached by phone Tuesday, and information about the closure could not be found on the business' website.

The closure announcement marks the end of an era for the downtown staple, first opened in 1957 by Max Katz after a flood washed away his original location down the street in 1955.

Katz was from New York, hence the name, and owned a number of bakeries there throughout his life. He later sold the bakery to his son-in-law, Dominic Muro, who ran the bakery for over 50 years.

For decades, New York Bakery was a spot where regulars could be seen having breakfast together almost religiously. Their cakes and pastries could also typically be found at local gatherings and celebrations throughout Norwalk.

The bakery also featured a deli and grill that served up both breakfast and lunchtime sandwiches served on fresh-made rolls, as well as salads and other hot and cold food items.

The bakery nearly closed back in 2018, causing an uproar from many regulars, however it was saved last minute by new ownership.

It is currently unclear what led to the bakery permanently closing late last month.
