NORWALK, CT — Norwalk taxpayers have until Feb. 3, 2025, to pay their property tax bills for real estate, motor vehicle, business personal property taxes, as well as sewer use charges, without interest penalty, according to city officials.

Feb. 1 falls on a Saturday this year, so taxpayers have until the next business day to pay during this collection cycle, city officials noted.

According to a news release provided by the city, these bills are due Jan. 1, 2025, and reflect the second installment of charges due on the Grand List assessed on Oct. 1, 2023.

The first installment was payable by Aug. 1, 2024. Bills are being mailed to Norwalk taxpayers in late December 2024.

Real estate bills reflect the first year of the 2023 property revaluation, according to city officials.

The Tax Collector's Office, which is on the first floor of City Hall, is open for in-person payments Mondays through Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The office does not close for lunch.

Taxpayers may also pay taxes in person at one of 10 Norwalk bank branch locations, which include the following banks: Affinity Federal Credit Union, Bankwell, Fairfield County Bank, Norwalk Bank & Trust, Patriot Bank and Webster Bank.

There is no charge for the service, and the taxpayer does not need to be a bank customer to walk in and pay there, but they must bring their current tax bill. The banks will accept payments only through the morning of Feb. 3, 2025, according to city officials.

Mailed payments legibly postmarked by the U.S. Postal Service on or before Feb. 3 are considered timely regardless of when they are received by the Tax Collector's Office, according to city officials.

To pay in person at City Hall, credit, debit and ATM cards are all accepted.

To pay online or over the telephone, taxpayers may use a credit card, debit card, ATM card or E-Check (ACH payment/electronic check).

Residents can visit the city of Norwalk's website and navigate to the Tax Collector's home page to make a payment. They can pay over the telephone by calling (203) 318-9523 to be connected with an automated service, city officials said.

City officials also noted ACH payments ('E Check') payments made online incur an additional flat fee of $1.25. Fees for using credit and debit cards are higher and are based on the dollar amount of the transaction.

All fees are disclosed upfront; taxpayers may review the fees first and back out of the transaction. When paying online or by phone, the "year" taxpayers should enter is 2023, the Grand List year currently being collected.

Interest on late payments will be charged at the rate of 3 percent beginning on Feb. 4, 2025. This represents 1.5 percent per month for two months, January and February.

This rate will remain the same through Feb. 28, 2025, according to city officials.

Taxpayers who are unsure about what they owe may look up their taxes on the city's website here. Taxpayers also may research what they paid in prior years for income tax purposes; the city maintains five years of tax payment history through the "E Tax Bill Lookup" feature.

Failure to have received a tax bill does not exempt the taxpayer from interest charges. Interest is charged on all late payments, with no exception, per state law, according to city officials.
